Sonic X-Treme boxart

Boxart.

Sonic X-Treme was to be the first 3D Sonic game, but was cancelled as the developers fell ill trying to make it. They had a chance of using Yuji Naka`s Nights engine but he got angry and threatened to leave upon hearing of it. it was meant to compete against Nintendo's Super Mario 64 and Sony's Crash Bandicoot but never saw the light of day.

To make up for this loss, Sega decided to release Sonic 3D Blast on the Sega MegaDrive, towards  the end of the console's lifespan.

We didn't get a true 3D Sonic game until Sonic Adventure on the DreamCast.
